How to feel more peaceful by adjusting expectations

Learn about the simple way to know when it’s time to lower your expectations, and how this will help you feel a deeper sense of peace and ease in your life.

The other day I was thinking about this old MadTV sketch that I used to love, Lowered Expectations. Do you remember it?

mad tv lowered expectations sketch with couple walking hand in hand

It was about a dating service that showed video interviews of people you could date, if you just lowered your expectations 🤣

Although today a lot of the sketches on there would clearly be inappropriate because of their stereotyping, at the time they were just goofy to me. I would sit and laugh and laugh 🤣 Stuart was another one I loved, the grown adult playing a young sweet kid that would then rage out of nowhere.

Anyways, I was thinking about that the other morning. About lowering expectations. If you're in my community reading this, chances are, you set really high expectations for yourself. Sometimes even unattainable ones.

I think I used to have a lot of unconscious, unattainable expectations for myself - for example, trying to look like or be like someone else.

It can show up so innocently. I recently moved into a new home, and didn’t realize how high of (and unrealistic) my expectations for the timeline for getting the new house set up.

So, this article is a little reminder for you to try out lowering your expectations today.

I want to point out though that there’s a difference between lowering unrealistic unhealthy expectations, and settling for less than you desire. I am not advocating for the latter.

How do you tell the difference? It’s simple really.

To tell the difference, notice where it’s coming from.

Are the higher expectations coming from a place that feels tight and constricted in your body (aka fear, ego, human-self)?

Or, is it coming from a place of desire and a more open feeling in your body (aka love, drive, excitement). If it’s the second one, you can think of that more as a longing and a knowing (i.e. you know you’re meant for more) than a place of too high expectations.

For the ones that feel constricted, stress-y, overwhelming, or unattainable, what if you gave yourself a break today and just lowered them?

You’ll feel a lot better, enjoy life more, and in fact, get better results anyways in my experience. The Universe can really meet you more easily when you’re in that energy of ease and love.

Enjoy the break :)
